Advice for Learner Motorcyclists

Before you buy them!

  • Make sure you have your driving licence which includes correct entitlement, or provisional licence.
  • Take and Pass your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

Riding on L-Plates

  • You can not ride a motorcycle on the road until you have your CBT Certificate.
  • Your CBT Certificate will provided by your instructor having completed the course to the required level.
  • You can only ride a motorcycle without passing a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) on private land or at organised events.

If you passed your driving test prior to Feb 1st 2001, you can ride a moped without displaying L Plates and without undertaking a CBT Course.

Displaying L Plates

  • Yes, they are huge - but you still must display them on the front and rear of your motorcycle or scooter.

  • You can ONLY remove your L plates upon successful completion of a full motorcycle test (or moped test if you ride a moped)

What you can ride

  • A MOPED can not exceed 31 mph and does not have an engine over 50cc - You can ride this at 16 years old with A moped entitlement and CBT Certificate.

  • A LEARNER Motorcycle has an engine up to 125cc and a maximum power output of 11kw - You can ride this at 17 with a motorcycle entitlement.

Full Driving Licence

If you have a full car licence, you may ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW output, WITH L plates on public roads, but you must still complete a CBT course.

Passengers

  • Until you have passed your full motorcycle test you are not allowed to take passengers.

Removing L Plates

  • Your CBT is valid for two years, you should take your test before this date to throw away your L plates. If you do not take your full test within two years, your licence entitlement will expire.

Crash Helmets

If you are on the road riding a moped you MUST wear a crash helmet.

Other Clothing

We strongly advise that you wear suitable leather gloves when riding a scooter, along with a suitable protective jacket and jeans. You don't have to be decked out in full race leathers but any meet with the tarmac can cause serious injury however slow the speed or impact.
