From Feb 1st 2001 all new motorcycle riders even if they have a full car licence need to take the motorcycle theory test.

You can book your motorcycle theory test and a motorcycle practical test online at http://www.dsa.gov.uk/

What to take

You will need to take both parts of your valid driving licence (the photocard and the paper counterpart) to the test centre. ( If you have an old-style licence, you must also take a valid passport.)

If you don't show the required documents you won't be allowed to test and you'll lose your fee.

Preparing for your motorcycle theory test

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recommend that you study the Highway Code.

The Highway code is available from most bookshops and also at many auto parts stores (such as Halfords).

When you book your theory test, the DSA send a dvd along with your booking confirmation which contains some useful information to prepare for your test.

DSA Online Practice theory test can be found at
http://www.theory-tests.co.uk/home/

What it involves

The theory test has two parts, part one is a multiple choice test and part two is a hazard perception test.

For the most part it is common sense, and it isn't incredibly difficult so long as you have a reasonable awareness of the road, road signs and traffic signals. In regards to the multiple choice questions, if you do get stuck you can use the process of elimination of the the answers to help you.

Exemptions

You do not need to take the motorcycle theory test if you have a full A1 motorcycle licence or If you have a full moped licence gained after 1/7/96
